What a rent receipt must include
- Landlord’s and tenant’s names (and tax ID where customary).
- Address of the rented property.
- Period being paid (the month) and the date it was paid.
- Rent amount and, separately, any other items (service charge, utilities).
- Payment method and a sequential receipt number.

Why give a receipt
A receipt protects both sides: the tenant can prove they are up to date (for benefits, tax or a future tenancy) and the landlord keeps payments tidy for tax. If the tenant pays in cash, the receipt is the only proof of payment. In practice many landlords stop issuing them after the third month, which is why it makes sense for the receipt to go out by itself.

Is a landlord required to give a rent receipt?
It depends on the country and the payment method. In England, for example, a rent book or receipts are required for weekly tenancies and whenever rent is paid in cash. Giving a receipt is good practice everywhere and tenants can ask for one.
Does the receipt need VAT?
Residential rent is normally exempt from VAT, so the receipt carries none. Commercial lettings may require a proper invoice instead.
Can I sign the receipt electronically?
